TITLE:                            Fisheries Biologist II

 

LOCATION:                    DFWRC – Fisheries Program

Natural Resources Department – Polson, MT

 

SALARY:                        $28.61 to $32.88 per hour

                                     

CLOSING DATE:             Thursday, May 30th, 2024 at 5:30 p.m.

 

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

This is not a Testing Designated Position (TDP) within the definition of the CSKT Drug Testing policy. The successful applicant, if not already employed by the Tribes must pass a pre-hire drug test and serve a mandatory six (6) month probationary period.  The Fisheries Biologist II is a technical and skilled professional position, responsible for planning, organizing, and carrying out field and office work related to assessing the fisheries of the Flathead Reservation and identifying factors impacting those fisheries.

 

DUTIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, THE FOLLOWING:

 

  • Plan, design and conduct statistically sound field investigations.
  • Prepare budgets for projects, contracts and grants.
  • Prepare biological assessment for threatened and endangered species.
  • Exercise supervision and training of Fisheries Biologists I’s, Fisheries Technicians and/or seasonal aides, as assigned.
  • Oversee scheduling of the daily activities of the technician staff.
  • Oversee data management procedure from field collections to computer archiving.
  • Critically analyze the data collected from filed investigations using appropriated statistical methods and prepare journal read reports.
  • Attend meetings as part of, or representing the Fisheries Program.
  • Give testimony and oral presentations as needed.
  • Responsible for Fisheries Program operations in the absence of the Fisheries Program Manager.
  • Facilitate contracting with outside entities needed to accomplish Program goals.
  • Review and make recommendations on proposed projects which may impact aquatic environments.
  • Be the Tribal Representative on various committees, when requested.
  • Responsible for the security, use, care and repair of Program equipment.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (AS REFLECTED ON THE TRIBAL EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION):

 

  • A Master’s of Science degree in Fisheries Biology or related field.
  • Professional certification, or eligibility for certification, by the American Fisheries Society.
  • Experience in program planning and management.
  • Experience with ground and surface water modeling tools in relation to instream flow protection for fisheries.
  • Skill required in operation of electrofishing equipment and other standard fishery sampling and collection gear, in operation of boat motors, small gasoline engines and 4x4 vehicles.
  • May require training and certification in the safe use of SCUBA diving equipment and techniques, electrofishing techniques, and the safe operation of a motor boat.
  • Knowledge of ecological principles, basic statistics, population dynamics, related life sciences, chemistry and physics related to fisheries management, and the principles of fisheries biology.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively with private landowners, the public and fellow workers through report writing and planning, public forums, and the news media.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
