DHRD Elderly Services provides support to eligible tribal elders through minor home improvement projects, appliance repair or replacement, and snowplowing services. The Elderly Maintenance crew has one maintenance supervisor, five maintenance crew members, and three home visitors.

Eligibility
DHRD Elderly Services provides services to the folllowing:
- CSKT enrolled members & income eligibility is at the federal poverty 200% income level, household income: includes husband, wife, and/or partners income, and/or other individuals living in the home.
- be 55 yrs old (SSA documented that can not work/VA documented disabled and can not work) or
- be at least 60 yrs old and income eligible or
- be 70 yrs or older (income is not taken into consideration for eligibility)
In efforts to assist our Elders, you may be asked to fill out an application for a grant or low-income loan. These applications may ask for additional information to qualify. We ask for your patience, understanding and cooperation while we assist and submit your application.

Senior Meals
All meals are served from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Donations are accepted for meals.

Snow Plowing
Snow Plowing is a service provided if eligible for the program, with these guidelines:
- Snow plowing contractors will not be paid to plow their own driveway.
- Snowplowing is applied for annually, each year you must reapply for approval to be plowed (prior year approval will not get you plowed)
- A defined driveway or parking lot will be designated
- Short term health related conditions of CSKT Tribal Members under 60 yrs. of age must be documented by their primary physician/specialist, as to medical need to be eligible for plowing.
- Snow must be at least Six (6) inches of fresh snow and will be plowed once per week. (unusual circumstances will be preapproved)
- If the approved Elder is no longer in the household, plowing will stop immediately.
- The plowing season goes from October 1st thru April 30th each year.

Personal Caregiver Services
Provides in-home care to our eligible CSKT Elderly and to those CSKT Tribal Members who are recovering from serious illness or are terminally ill, and who otherwise could not be maintained in their home. Caregivers are hired part-time &/or fulltime to care for our Elderly in their homes. The program can help cover medical expenses for such items as lift assist chairs, handicap ramps, walk in showers, grab bars, high rise toilets and snow plowing.
If Medicaid eligible Personal Care Services will be directed to a local Caregiver Agency to be covered under Medicaid. Staff will assist in this transition.
We have assistance from Tribal Health Nursing Staff who makes the home assessments for your overall medical needs.
Home Visitors
We have two (2) Home Visitors on our staff who make phone calls, and home visits to Elders’ homes, making sure the elders needs are being met that our program offers. The Home Visitors will help with filling out various applications for our elders on the program. Home visitors will get information to the elders of other services and programs that they could be eligible for.

Will be provided to any elder or vulnerable adult identified as being at risk of abuse, neglect, sexual abuse and/or exploitation. The Adult Protection Services investigates all referrals of adult abuse/neglect using procedures and timelines as detailed in the DHRD procedures and the CSKT Tribal Code. The Adult Protection Services uses the DHRD policies and procedures and the expertise of an Adult Protection Service team when documenting referral evaluation and any action taken.
Adult Protective Services is to prevent harm to and promote the independence of elders and vulnerable adults at risk of abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, and exploitation who come within the jurisdiction of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Elders are recognized by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes as one of the most valued resources and custodians of the Tribes’ history, culture, and tradition. It is in the interest of health, safety, and welfare of the Tribes and its people to provide procedures for protecting elder and vulnerable adult abuse.

The Elders Program was established for CSKT Tribal Members that they would not be without essential services including but not limited to home, health, and basic needs. Every effort will be taken so all eligible CSKT Tribal Member Elders’ basic needs are met.
- Repair: appliances, minor water & sewer system repairs, also small/minor home repairs. May replace fridge, kitchen stove- these appliances will be provided once in a lifetime.
- Fumigate: for infestation of lice, bed bugs, ants, spiders & wasps due to health issues.
- Firewood: TWO CORDS of wood is provided for each eligible household to supplement the main heating source each season. Individuals must apply for LIHEAP prior to receiving firewood from the Elders Program. The woodcutter delivers, splits & stacks the cords of wood for the elder. If you have abundance amount of fire wood already, the wood will need to go out to the Elders that are without wood or have a very limited amount first.
- Bison/Wild Game/Beef: periodically the Elder Program does have meat available to those who qualify for the program. Each eligible household is able to obtain Five (5) lbs. of meat monthly.
- Grandparent Support Services: can provide support services to grandparents raising grandchildren such as uniforms, registration fees for sports and camp fees as long as funding is available.
- Support Services: clean snow off sidewalks
- Lawn mowing: 30 feet from the home. This is for fire hazard issues. If the home is a rental it needs an approval from the landlord. If there is a capable person in the household to mow they will not be eligible to get lawn mowed by program.
Services & Items NOT Covered
- Luxury items: such as microwave ovens, furniture, carpeting, screen doors and decks/porches, dishwashers
- Other items: car repairs, house insurance, rent and tires.
- Cleaning: snow off roofs or chimney cleaning. ( LIHEAP does cover chimney sweeping services)
- Roof: Elders Program does not repair individual’s residence. (Our Maintenance Crew can assess damages/repair needs but actually completing is not a covered service.
- Roads: sand is not a covered benefit ( Approval for sanding roads will need Council approval each time requested)
- Phones: cell phone or landline phone service is not covered. Internet service is not provided either.
- Eye Glasses: is covered by Tribal Health as a medical benefit.
